When I Don’t Understand, I Can Still Believe

Go-To Scripture — Proverbs 3:5–6 NLT

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Saturday’s Devotion

TRUST FIRST, UNDERSTANDING LATER

Proverbs 3:5–6 gives us a beautiful order:

Trust. Don’t lean on your own understanding. Seek God. Follow Him. Then He directs our path.

We often want to reverse the order.

We say:“God, explain it to me first, and then I’ll trust You.”

But that’s not faith.

Faith says:

“I trust You first.”

There will come a day when many things that confuse us now will make perfect sense.

One day we’ll see what we couldn’t see.

One day we’ll understand what we couldn’t understand.

But until then, we walk by faith.

We don’t have to reconcile everything in Scripture.

We don’t have to have an answer for every difficult question.

We don’t have to understand every mystery.

We have something better than an answer to every question.

We have Jesus.

And if Jesus is Lord, then His Word is trustworthy.

So when I come across something I cannot fully explain, I don’t have to throw away my faith.

I can simply say:“I don’t understand it yet—but God said it, and I believe it.”

That’s faith beyond understanding.

TODAY’S THOUGHT:

I may not understand everything God has said, but I can trust everything God has said.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, I choose to trust You. I surrender my need to understand everything before I believe. When I have questions, give me wisdom. When I face mysteries, give me faith. When Your Word challenges my understanding, help me submit my understanding to Your Word. Teach me to trust You with all my heart and follow You wherever You lead.

If You have said it, Lord, I believe it. Even when I don’t understand it. Even when I can’t explain it. Even when I can’t see it. I believe You.

Amen.

Friday’s Devotion

TRUSTING GOD WHEN LIFE DOESN’T MAKE SENSE

It’s one thing to say, “I trust God,” when everything is going well.

It’s another thing to say it when life doesn’t make sense.

Job didn’t understand what was happening.

Joseph didn’t understand the pit, the slavery, or the prison.

David didn’t understand why he had to spend years running from Saul after being anointed king.

Yet God was working in every chapter.

Sometimes we look at a chapter of our lives and think, “God, this cannot possibly be part of Your plan.”

But we are reading one chapter.

God sees the entire book.

That’s why Proverbs tells us to trust Him with all our heart.

Not part of our heart.

Not only when life makes sense.

All of it.

Faith beyond understanding says:

“God, I don’t understand what You’re doing, but I trust that You are good.”

“I don’t understand the road, but I trust the One leading me.”

“I don’t see the answer, but I trust the One who holds the answer.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT:

My circumstances may change, but God’s character does not.

PRAYER:

Father, when life doesn’t make sense, anchor me in who You are. Help me remember that circumstances don’t determine Your character. You are good, You are faithful, and You are still God—even when I don’t understand. Amen.

Thursday’s Devotion

I CAN TRUST GOD WITH THE MYSTERIES

Deuteronomy 29:29 says:

“The Lord our God has secrets known to no one.”

There are mysteries in Scripture.

There are things about God we will never completely understand this side of eternity.

And rather than being frustrated by that, perhaps we should allow those mysteries to remind us just how great God really is.

If we could completely explain God, He wouldn’t be much of a God.

Our finite minds cannot contain an infinite God.

Paul reached this point in Romans 11 when heconsidered God’s wisdom and plan. His response wasn’t frustration because he couldn’t explain everything.

His response was worship.

Sometimes the appropriate response to a mystery isn’t an explanation.

It’s “Lord, I trust You.”

We don’t have to reconcile everything.

We don’t have to solve every mystery.

We don’t have to possess all the answers.

We simply need to know the One who does.

TODAY’S THOUGHT:

Some things are meant to be understood later, but trusted now.

PRAYER:

Lord, give me peace with the things I cannot explain. Help me resist the temptation to make my limited understanding the measure of Your truth. Where there are mysteries, teach me to worship. Where there are questions, teach me to trust. Amen.

Wednesday’s Devotion

WHEN GOD’S TIMING DOESN’T MAKE SENSE

Sometimes the hardest thing to understand isn’t what God has said.

It’s when He chooses to do it.

We pray, and nothing seems to happen.

We believe, but the circumstances don’t change.

We ask God to move, and He seems silent.

But God’s silence does not mean God’s absence.

Think about Lazarus in John 11. Jesus knew Lazarus was sick, yet He didn’t immediately go to him. From the disciples’ perspective, the delay didn’t make sense.

From the family’s perspective, it certainly didn’t make sense.

But Jesus was doing something greater than they could see.

Sometimes we interpret God’s delay as God’s denial.

But God’s timetable is not our timetable.

Proverbs 3:6 says, “He will show you which path to take.”

Notice that it doesn’t say He will show you the entire road.

He gives us enough light for the next step.

Faith doesn’t demand a map of the future.

Faith takes the next step with God.

TODAY’S THOUGHT:

I don’t need to know when God will act to trust that He is working.

PRAYER:

Father, help me trust Your timing. When I don’t understand the delay, keep me from assuming You have forgotten me. Give me grace to take the next step even when I cannot see what comes after it. Amen.

Tuesday’s Devotion

FAITH BELIEVES GOD’S WORD

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Faith has always required us to believe beyond what our eyes can prove.

Noah built an ark before he saw the rain.

Abraham left his homeland without knowing exactly where God was taking him.

Moses walked toward the Red Sea believing God would make a way.

The disciples followed Jesus without understanding everything He was doing.

Faith doesn’t mean we stop thinking.

It means we recognize that human reason has limits.There is nothing wrong with asking questions. God is not threatened by sincere questions. But there is a difference between asking, “Lord, help me understand,” and saying, “If I can’t understand it, I won’t believe it.”

The first is humility.

The second makes ourselves the final authority.

Faith says, “God’s Word is true whether or not I can fully explain it.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT:

I don’t make God’s Word true by understanding it. I believe it because God has spoken it.

PRAYER:

Lord, give me a faith that is willing to believe Your Word even when I cannot see the whole picture. Let my questions lead me closer to You rather than away from You. Help me trust Your Word because I trust You. Amen.

Monday’s Devotion

GOD IS GOD, AND I AM NOT

Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways.

That can be difficult for us because we like to be in control.

We want to know why.

Why did this happen?

Why did God allow that?

Why this person?

Why this timing?

Why this way?

Sometimes God gives us an answer.

Sometimes He doesn’t.

And when He doesn’t, faith learns to say, “God knows what I don’t know.”

Think about a child sitting in the back seat while his father drives. The child doesn’t know where every road leads. He doesn’t understand why Dad turned leftinstead of right. He doesn’t know what’s happening several miles ahead.

But the child doesn’t have to understand the route to trust the driver.

Neither do we.

There are things about God we will never fully comprehend because He is God and we are not. His wisdom is infinite; ours is limited.

That isn’t a reason to doubt Him.

It’s a reason to trust Him more.

TODAY’S THOUGHT:

I don’t have to know everything because I know the One who does.

PRAYER:

Father, forgive me for the times I have demanded answers before I was willing to trust You. Remind me that Your wisdom is greater than mine. When I cannot understand Your ways, help me remember that You see what I cannot see.

Sunday’s Devotion

I DON’T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING

There are some things in Scripture we can explain. There are other things we can study for years and still not completely understand.

And that’s okay.

One of the great mistakes we can make as believers is thinking we have to reconcile every mystery before we can believe God. We want every question answered, every detail explained, and every difficult passage neatly tied together.

But God never asked us to understand everything.

He asked us to trust Him.

Proverbs 3:5 doesn’t say, “Trust in the Lord when everything makes sense.” It says, “Do not depend on your own understanding.”There will be times when God’s Word challenges what we think makes sense. There will be times when His timing doesn’t make sense. There will be times when His direction doesn’t make sense.

Faith says, “I may not understand this, but I know who said it.”

Our confidence isn’t ultimately in our ability to explain God. Our confidence is in the character of God.

If God has said it, I can believe it—even when I don’t understand it.

TODAY’S THOUGHT-

Understanding is not the foundation of my faith. God is.

PRAYER-

Lord, help me to trust You beyond what I can understand. When I encounter things in Your Word that I cannot explain, keep me from allowing my questions to become greater than my faith. Teach me to rest in who You are. If You have said it, help me believe it. Amen.

Bonus Devotion

“When God Speaks”

Scripture: Psalm 19

Key Verse:

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” — Psalm 19:14

Reflection

David begins Psalm 19 by looking up.

“The heavens declare the glory of God.” The sun, moon, stars, clouds, and every sunrise silently proclaim that there is a Creator. Creation speaks without words, yet its message reaches every corner of the earth. Every morning reminds us that God is still on His throne and His mercies are new.

Then David shifts his attention from the skies to the Scriptures.

The heavens reveal God’s power, but God’s Word reveals His heart. David describes God’s law as perfect,trustworthy, right, pure, clean, and true. The Word of God refreshes the soul, gives wisdom, brings joy, enlightens the eyes, and guides our steps.

Many people admire God’s creation but neglect God’s Word. Yet it is through Scripture that we come to know His character, His promises, and ultimately His Son.

Finally, David looks inward.

Standing before the greatness of God and the perfection of His Word, David becomes aware of his own need. He asks God to reveal hidden faults and keep him from willful sin. The psalm ends not with a declaration but with a prayer.

That is often the proper response when God speaks: worship, humility, and surrender.

Today, take a moment to look up and see God’s glory in creation. Open His Word and hear His voice. Then look inward and invite Him to search your heart. The God who created the heavens is also the Redeemer who lovingly shapes His children.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for revealing Yourself through the beauty of creation and through the truth of Your Word. Open my eyes today to see Your glory all around me. Open my heart to receive Your instruction and wisdom.

Search me and reveal anything that does not honor You. Forgive my hidden faults and guard me from sins that would draw me away from You. Let Your Word guide my thoughts, my decisions, and my actions today.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

In Jesus’ name,Amen.

The heavens may show us that God exists, but His Word shows us how to walk with Him.
